The Loss of a Friend

Sean

I found out today that my long time friend Sean ‘Biscuits McGillicudy’ Egan passed away after battling a variety of health problems.

Sean was one of those unique characters that comes along once in a lifetime. It is impossible to truly describe the person that he was, although I once tried.
Here are a few things I will remember about Sean:

  • He loved drumming…all the time.
  • He was the proudest member of the Ancient Mariners I’ve ever met. He would tell complete strangers about the Mariners and how cool he thought we were, as if they should already be aware of the group.
  • He was hilariously and indiscriminately off-color to everyone, including your mother if one dared to introduce the two of them. He had a floridly graphic way of describing the world that would make grown men blush, and people loved him for it because, oddly, it was a breath of fresh air in our everyone’s-a-winner world.
  • With women, he had the greatest opening lines. Most recently, a woman was introduced to him as a former school mate and he responded with with, ‘So, we went to high school together? Did we make out behind the gym?’
  • He would write me letters, not emails, letters.
  • He would ask about my family…everyone in my family, including my grandmother and grandfather.
  • He would always have a compliment for me.
  • He would listen.
  • He loved everyone in his family and always spoke highly of them.
  • He was a true friend.

I will miss him.

We will all miss him deeply!

I only talked to him a couple weeks ago to invite him to Freezer Jam, our midwestern gathering of fifers and drummers… One of our fifers visited him a week before that.

You forgot to mention his tenure at Cooperman. There are an awful lot of folks out there carrying drums crafted by Sean. So, there’s a lot of tangible things out there to go with our intangible, priceless, memories.

He was the warmest and friendliest curmudgeon I’ve ever met – a true pleasure to be around!

I just heard this sad news as well. Though I didn’t know Sean well (having only been around this greate F&D community for 6 years now), he remembered my name, and always greeted me as warmly as folks he’d probably known all his life.

I passed this info on to others in my corps whom I thought would like to know. Do you know of calling hours? Where/when?

Sean was more than a friend, he was a brother in a lot of ways. Outrageous and crazy but intensely kind and loving. The guy was the best. I will never forget him. I miss him very much already. My thoughts and prayers go out to Frank, Pat, Shannon and his dear mom. The Eagans were as close a family as mine so I know this must be really hard for them. My dog, who he loved so much, misses him too. Love you Sean.

Greg’s comments were so true about Sean, Every time I would see him he always had some kind of sexual comment for me and always had a great big hug for me and Bill. I will miss them both. Sean had such a big heart and truly was one of the nicest people I ever met. To the whole Egan family Bill and I wish you love and blessings at this tough time. And know he will be missed by many people.

There are plenty of stories I could interject here, but just to expand on Greg’s first bullet “He loved drumming… all the time.” I always loved when the Mariners were playing gigs where somebody would speak during our performance, the instant Sean felt they had talked too long he would let loose with a bellowing “CAN I PLAY MY DRUM NOW???”

Rest in peace buddy and enjoy the big MUSTAH beyond.

No words can describe the type of impact that Sean had on people. He was a true image of what a brother in arms should be. At musters I would picture Sean when I would hear someone yelling the Mariners are coming down the road YELLIN, SCREAMIN, and KICKING ASS !! From the Old Guard crew, You are for ever in our memories bro!

My mom just phoned with with the news of Sean’s passing. I met Sean when I was around 15 in Bridgton. We were close friends for sometime until I joined the Navy. My last letter from him was when his brother Pat got married. You all describe Sean just as I remembered him all those years ago. He was definitely a one of a kind and someone I will never forget. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
